When you live in a town like Park City, the beautiful surroundings highlight the importance of preserving and maintaining nature. At the same time, green initiatives are taking an even more prominent role in things like city planning, lifestyle, and even politics.
Going green used to be a fringe activity, but today, it’s widely accepted by the masses. In fact, for many homebuyers, sustainability, and green initiatives are important factors when finding a home and purchasing.
Luckily, Park City has you covered on all fronts when it comes to “Going Green.” The city is rife with initiatives designed to improve the quality of living while respecting the environment and preserving the spectacular nature all around.
Here are some Park City green initiatives you should know about:
Net Zero by 2030
The Park City Community Foundation Climate Fund was established to help fight global warming and help Park City reach zero emissions by 2030. As a mountain town, the threat of global warming is very real when our winters get shorter and snowfall starts to diminish.
That’s why the Climate Fund was established to work with both public and private entities to help Park City reach zero emissions by 2030.

Open Space is Essential
We’ve discussed this on our blog before, but Park City planners prioritize the preservation of open space. One of the primary reasons why people move here is to enjoy nature. Whether hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, or horseback riding, it’s hard to enjoy these tranquil pastimes without the space to do so.
As a result, there are often fewer new developments in Park City than you might expect to see, as much of the land is reserved as open space. Additionally, many developers set aside land in their projects for open space, giving as much back to the community as possible.
We’ve Got the Watts
In Park City’s effort to be more green, a lot has been done to support electric infrastructure. Large towns need transit, but in Park City, you can get around town pretty easily without relying on gasoline. Here are just a few examples:
City Buses
Did you know the city buses in Park City are free? Free transit promotes fewer cars on the road, helping to clear the streets and clean the air. Additionally, most city buses in Park City are electricity-powered.
Electric Cars
We often joke that Park City is ‘Tesla Nation.’ Many cars you see on the road here are EVs. And with many luxurious brands coming out with new EVs every year, we’re likely to see even more of these cars hit the road. And with more EVs comes…
Charging Stations
Finding a charging station for your electric vehicle is easy in Park City, but what’s even more interesting is the growing number of charging stations for e-bikes! Electric bicycles are rising in popularity both as a way to improve inclusivity in the sport of cycling, and also as a way to commute and travel around the city. These charging stations are available all over Park City with more coming every year it seems!

No bike? No problem. In Park City, we have city-owned bikes available to use. Summit Bike Share was the first program of its kind launched in 2017. Offering e-bike rentals with 20 stations across the city, residents and visitors alike can purchase daily, weekly, or monthly passes to access the full fleet.
Park City’s Landscape Incentive Program
In 2023, Park City began an incentive program offering $2/square foot of lawn turf replaced with “Water Wise” and “Fire Wise” landscaping. The incentive was designed to help Park City homeowners use less water and protect their property against wildfires. You can learn more about the program and check your eligibility right here.
No Idling Allowed
In an effort to curb pollution, Park City Municipal introduced no idling legislation. Cars are not permitted to idle for more than one minute unless the car is forced to remain still due to traffic or road conditions. If you let your car idle for too long, you could be subject to a fine.

Composting and Recycling
Food waste often presents a problem for municipalities. When it ends up in the landfill it can release methane gas, which is more potent and dangerous than carbon dioxide. In an effort to reduce the amount of food waste going to the landfill, Park City has introduced a variety of composting initiatives including bin collections, workshops, and more.
Additionally, recycling services are free in Park City and services are always expanding with more recycling centers and initiatives to help residents and visitors recycle effectively.
Powered By the Sun
More and more homeowners are choosing solar power for their homes in Park City. Today’s solar panels are sleek and unobtrusive, offering a wide range of benefits. In addition to showing your commitment to sustainable energy, solar panels can help reduce your electricity bills and protect your home against emergency power outages.
Green Enough?
Green initiatives are always evolving and improving. The thought is not about being perfect, but rather, being consistent. And Park City consistently does more to help the environment. If you’re looking for a property built with sustainability in mind in a community committed to protecting nature, Park City is a great choice for you!
