September 27th, 2023 | Resorts

When it comes to resort towns, we might be slightly biased. We love Deer Valley for its world-class skiing, incredible amenities, beautiful vistas, and luxurious ambiance. However, as special and unique as we know Deer Valley to be, it sometimes strikes a comparison to other high-end resort towns.

One of the most common questions we get asked is, “How does Deer Valley compare to Aspen?” Indeed, they are both considered to be incredible, high-end outdoor paradises, but there are a few key differences you should know about.

Skiing in Deer Valley Vs. Aspen

Both Deer Valley and Aspen are known as fantastic skiing destinations. But how do they stack up?

Aspen’s base elevation sits slightly above Deer Valley at about 7,900 feet above sea level while the mountain height reaches about 11,000 feet above sea level at its peak. Deer Valley is located about 6,500 feet above sea level while the altitude at Empire summit is about 9,500 feet.

Both cities enjoy a similar climate with a lot of snowfall and long winters.

In terms of skiable area, Aspen is physically larger than Deer Valley. However, despite the differences in size, Deer Valley and Aspen still have a similar number of slopes and trails.

It’s also important to note that while they are both similar in size, there are currently plans in the works to expand Deer Valley, essentially doubling its size over the next few years.

Both areas have a variety of trails catering to skiers of all levels, however, Deer Valley has a slight advantage with more beginner-intermediate trails.

You also can’t beat Deer Valley’s exclusivity and opulence. The ski runs are meticulously maintained as a “ski-only” resort, meaning you cannot snowboard here. The resort also limits capacity to ensure the slopes feel spacious and exclusive. While in Aspen, it can get fairly busy on a weekend.

There’s also no comparison when it comes to the après in Deer Valley. The resort has incredible luxurious dining options and is located just a short distance from Park City where you’ll find casual options to relax after a long day on the slopes.

Living in Deer Valley Vs. Aspen

Both Deer Valley and Aspen are markets dominated by the vacation industry. Many properties for sale in both areas are bought as second homes or vacation properties. Many residents only spend part of their year here and view the area as a playground to enjoy.

Aspen has a distinct “Beverly Hills” vibe with flashy, high-end shopping, dining, and entertainment. It’s been a popular destination for the rich and famous for decades. It’s busy and bustling with excitement. Aspen is less than 5 miles from the local Aspen/Pitkin County Airport and about three hours away from the Denver International Airport. Aspen is also very well-known for its walkability and the arts and culture scene.

Deer Valley, comparatively, feels closer to that of a European ski town. It’s subdued and quietly luxurious. The ambiance feels serene, refined, and peaceful. The dining and shopping scene in Deer Valley could rival some of the most luxurious areas in the world, but there is an overall slower pace and relaxed undertone permeating the area. Deer Valley residents are often comprised of outdoors enthusiasts who love spending time in nature all year round.

As a ski-in, ski-out resort, getting around Deer Valley is also easy. Salt Lake City International Airport is about 35 minutes away from Deer Valley, and there are regular shuttle services to make things easy.

If you’re looking to live like the locals, Park City is also extremely close. Although in its own right, Park City is a fantastic ski destination, there are more permanent residents living in Park City with a more relaxed, casual, and outdoorsy atmosphere.

Buying Real Estate in Deer Valley Vs. Aspen

If you’re in the market for a resort property, Aspen and Deer Valley both present great options. While homes for sale in Deer Valley and Aspen are both undoubtedly luxurious, there are a few key differences.

Aspen has numerous high-end properties and opulent estates that attract a wealth of affluent buyers. Aspen is often considered one of the most expensive markets in the country for buying real estate.

Deer Valley, on the other hand, is also exclusive and luxurious. However, prices trend slightly lower compared to Aspen. One reason for this is likely the types of properties available. In Deer Valley, land comes at a premium, and the primary types of homes available are condos or ski-in/ski-out properties, making real estate in Deer Valley slightly more accessible than Aspen.
