“Après ski” – the social activities and entertainment that cap off a satisfying day on the slopes – has become a beloved verb for most mountain guests, but the 2020-21 ski season has created an opportunity to rethink the way we wind down after a day at the resort.
Tailgating, often reserved for pre-game festivities at sporting events, is fast becoming a new favorite way to finish off your ski day at Park City’s ski resorts, and it doesn’t take much to elevate it to next-level fun for family and friends. Afterall, skiing and food are both better when savored with people you enjoy, so plan ahead to maximize the fun.
What’s more, having a good parking lot set-up can provide a great home base for that midday break when you’re looking to refuel, warm up or – considering we’re entering prime spring skiing with warmer weather and longer days – quench your thirst and catch some rays.
From fundamental to “fancy,” here is a list of tips, tricks and items you’ll need to hit all the high notes and claim your spot among parking-lot royalty:
THE ESSENTIALS
- This may seem obvious, but make a checklist that covers the basics: packed lunch (sandwich, snacks, fruit, etc.), drinks/water, trash bags and clean-up basics (wipes, napkins, sanitizer), and don’t forget extra sunscreen.
- Consider the weather and day’s temperatures and pack a bag of extra gear to change into: knit hat (to cover up inevitable helmet hair!), less bulky gloves, comfy but warm street shoes or boots, hand/foot warmers, extra battery or power source to charge the phone.
- Camp chairs. Nobody wants to stand after an afternoon of satisfying thigh burn.
NEXT-LEVEL NECESSITIES
- Elevate your grub game with a hot lunch: Head to your camping-supply stash and bust out the camp stove or portable grill, or make your chili/soup/stew ahead of time and transport it in a car-compatible crock pot that plugs into the car lighter.
- Fancier food calls for fancier gear: A provides room to lay out your spread, which may now include plates, utensils, camp table condiments, etc. Pack a cooler for food items and an assortment of beverages. TIP: Consider cans for easy, recycling disposal — and don’t forget the koozies!
- Music: Turn up the volume on your tailgate with a portable, Bluetooth speaker and play your favorite soundtrack.
PARKING-LOT SUPREMACY
- Mark your spot: It’s important to be respectful of your parking-lot neighbors as well as any resort rules regarding social distancing, but let friends and family know exactly where your home base is by pitching a pop-up canopy or awning and flying a flag (it’s not just for NASCAR!).
- Set the scene for the ultimate party vibe with a costume change (think retro wear, your favorite sports jersey, Hawaiian shirt and/or unique hat) and some game setups (washers, cornhole, horseshoes, etc.). For the finishing touches, don’t forget portable space heaters and the perennial ski-town favorite: the shot-ski!
Final thoughts: No one wants to walk a half mile to get back to the car, so show up early and get a prime spot! Try to arrive with friends and family so that everyone can park near each other for easy collaboration.
