Looking out our office windows this week, we couldn’t tear my eyes away from the first bright streaks of yellow in the trees. Can fall be here so soon? This got us talking about how the seemingly overnight change from summer to fall always inspires us to reflect on our lives. As children, we grew up knowing that the trueNew Year’s Day is the first day of a new school year. It’s when we first learned to sense the wheel of life had clicked-off another notch. Now that we’re adults with school behind us, we agreed that autumn l has remained the beginning of our annual yardstick to measure how our life is going.

Knowing that the only constant in life is constant change does not seem to thwart our attempts to maintain consistency and permanence. Despite our best efforts to prevent change, our children grow up, jobs come and go, relationships bloom and fade, and advancing age makes itself at home on our faces. In retrospect, these continual changes are what we call our life, and anything that remains steady in the face of change becomes especially precious. Family and friendship, loyalty and shared experiences, and love of our community were things we at Chin-Fleming-Harris talked about as our most valued gems of life.
Focus on the things you can change and let go of things you can’t.
There’s a good reason human beings were created unable to see behind themselves. While crafting our lives, whatever has already happened is not nearly as important as what is happening directly in front of us. While we have no control over the past, we have complete control over our thoughts and actions in this moment, and these are literally creating our tomorrows.

During this shoulder season in Park City, we invite you join us in taking time to sit outside and reflect on the crazy-busy summer that has just drawn to a close. In just a few short weeks, our calendars will again be packed with holiday parties and long lists of to-dos. But for now, let’s all take a deep breath and unwind. Without much effort, we’ll remember all the reasons we love our community, friends, and family, making this fall as one of the best in our lives. The leaves that are fluttering past our window urge us to contemplate on all that we have to be grateful for.
