More than 40 years since Deer Valley Resort first welcomed guests to Park City from around the world to enjoy its world-class skiing, dining and summer activities, the resort — along with parent company Alterra Mountain Co. — announced plans for a complete revision of the Snow Park Lodge and 15 acres of surface parking lots at the resort’s base area.

“The Snow Park Lodge has been an iconic entry point for Deer Valley skiers since the resort opened in 1981, serving as the gateway to a renowned skiing experience,” Jeremy Levitt, Deer Valley president, said in a statement. “A lot has changed since then, and an updated vision for the Snow Park base area will cement Deer Valley’s storied legacy for decades to come, further elevating the guest experience and responding to the evolving needs of both our guests and the local community we’re proud to be part of.”

To that end, plans for a reimagined base area — which have actually been part of the resort’s master plan approved in 1977 — will provide additional accommodations and skier services, new contemporary food and beverage choices, expanded après-ski options, and an expansive “ski beach.” The new base area will cover the stretch of ground where Deer Valley’s five surface parking lots currently sit.

Pending local government review and approval, the Snow Park project is expected to break ground in 2022. Senior communications manager Emily Summers noted that Deer Valley recently submitted its application to Park City’s Planning Commission for a conditional use permit (CUP), seeking approval to begin work on the utilities and parking structures that will serve as the base for the new development.

“We are honoring our previous entitlement approvals, such as height limits and square footage,” Summers added. “We also are working with the community and area home-owners associations regarding the development plans and seeking their feedback.”

Among the project’s highlights is a new, integrated transportation and mobility hub that will include multiple access points from the new parking facilities, which will dramatically improve guests’ arrival and mountain access experience.

Additionally, Snow Park’s architecture and design plans are inspired by the mountains and incorporate Deer Valley’s natural setting into the flow throughout the new plaza, and showcasing available activities and, of course, the resort’s stunning mountain views.

“We’ve spent a great deal of time assessing our guests’ needs and how best to meet them, while considering how to balance this with the interests of the local community,” said Rich Wagner, Snow Park project manager.

“Our conceptual plans for Snow Park are designed to be consistent with Park City’s vision and values and respectful of our neighbors and the local community. We’ve begun reaching out to share our concepts and preliminary designs and gain valuable community feedback, and we’ll continue doing that throughout the city’s review and approval process.”
